Paramedic, colleagues attacked for being late
POLICE are investigating the alleged assault of an ambulance team by an angry mob in Xuhui District.
The incident happened about 2:20pm on Wednesday, when the ambulance, manned by a doctor, paramedic and driver, arrived at an address on Guyi Road to collect a man reported to be suffering from alcohol poisoning, police said yesterday.
According to an unnamed witness, a group of eight friends and neighbors of the intoxicated man were annoyed by the “late” arrival of the ambulance and asked the medical staff to explain themselves.
When they received no reply, the gang set upon them.
All three members of the team were assaulted, though the paramedic, a 26-year-old man surnamed Tao, was the primary target, the witness said.
After being hit with iron bars and fists, Tao suffered a concussion, and injuries to his head and body, the person said.
Police did not say if any of the attackers had been detained, nor did they say how “late” the ambulance was.
A person claiming to be Tao’s colleague uploaded a video of the attack to Weibo. He said the gang became agitated when Tao appeared to arrogantly dismiss their questions.
