Overloaded minibus of kids linked to illegal school claim

POLICE stopped an overloaded minibus in Baoshan District yesterday afternoon that they believe was ferrying children to an unlicensed school.

The 8-seat vehicle was found to be carrying 13 children aged between 4 and 8 when it was pulled over near the Hutai Road and Jutai Road junction.

Officers had received a tip-off, said eastday.com website.

All the children are pupils at an illegal school named Future Stars, said the report.

Illegal schools are sometimes set up for the children of migrant workers in the city unable to get places in Shanghai’s state schools.

Driver Chong Jun said that he was a fruit seller at a nearby market and had been paid 100 yuan (US$16.2) a day since September by Future Stars to pick up students who were the children of other stallholders.

Usually, the minibus was used for carrying fruit, he said.

But a woman surnamed Wang, who said she was the head teacher of the educational institution involved, insisted that it was not a school.

Instead, she claimed that it was a cram facility without a formal name and that the minibus belonged to parents of a student.

And she said that the driver only occasionally drove pupils.

Chong was fined 200 yuan for driving an overloaded vehicle and had 6 points deducted from his driving license.

The authorities are investigating Future Stars and whether Chong was licensed for transporting groups.
