Osmanthus tree suspect detained
A man suspected of the theft of an ancient Osmanthus tree in Qingpu District has been put under criminal detention for stealing, police said yesterday.
The stolen tree, about six meters in height, is said to be worth more than 100,000 yuan (US$15,000). It was stolen from the front of a property in Fuquan village.
After being alerted to the theft on September 16, police found track impressions of a construction vehicle from where the tree disappeared.
Police located the vehicle’s driver, surnamed Liu, who was working on a construction site that his father-in-law, surnamed Yao, was also involved with.
Yao allegedly admitted he had noticed the Osmanthus tree during the construction project and had realized its value. He then is alleged to have asked his son and Liu to dig out the tree and transport it to his residence.
Further investigation is taking place.
