Shanghai Light Music Orchestra to perform more often in Pudong theaters

PEOPLE living and working in the Pudong New Area can look forward to live music more often after the Shanghai Light Music Orchestra yesterday announced it is planning to make a move across the Huangpu River.

The state-owned ensemble, known for its performances of popular music, has signed a deal to relocate to the Lujiazui area from its current home in Changning District as part of local government efforts to raise the cultural quotient on the east side of the city.

“After the move, the orchestra will be able to perform more often in Pudong theaters, as well as at open air venues and even in office buildings,” its director Chu Baojie was quoted as saying in a press release issued jointly with the district government.

The group has already put on a number of outdoor performances, and is even considering staging some events at which local amateur musicians will be invited to play alongside the professionals, Chu said.

As well as the relocation of the light music orchestra, a number of museums, libraries, and other arts and cultural facilities are set to open in Pudong in the future.

Construction of a new opera house, as well as branches of the Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Library, will start next year, the release said.

Similarly, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and Shanghai Drama Art Center have signed agreements with the management committee of the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park to perform for people working and living there.

Kevin He, who works at the park, said he is looking forward to the expansion of the cultural offering.

“I like to see shows at the Shanghai Drama Art Center, but getting to downtown Xuhui District from Pudong takes me at least an hour each time,” he said.

“Having more local shows will be much better,” he said.
