Online service helps citizens check police progress after filing complaints

CITY residents who file complaints with their local police are now able to follow their cases online and rate the law enforcement officers’ work on the official website of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

Previously, such details were provided in person at the police station.

If residents agree to have information about their case put online, they will receive a case number via SMS within one or two working days of filing the complaint. They will be able to access details such as whether any suspects have been caught, by using that number and their identity card number.

They can also leave ratings and messages which will be automatically relayed to officers working on the case and their supervisors.

Fan Hongfei, director of the legal affairs office at the bureau, promised prompt action in the case of bad ratings.

“We will contact the person immediately, look into how the case was handled and give further replies and explanation,” Fan said.

However, cases involving “state secrets, business secrets, individual privacy or secrets of police work” will remain off limits, according to the website, which said that it generally takes one to two working days to have data updated.

In addition to the case-tracking service, police said the website will also publish legal documents involving administrative reviews and state compensation except those “entailing secrecy.”

Meanwhile, the portal is also listing laws, regulations and disciplines of police work in its “references to law enforcement” section.

The service is in Chinese.
