Online food-delivery firms shut down
FOUR online food-delivery platforms selling home-made food in Shanghai have been ordered to suspend service, the city's food watchdog said yesterday.
The food-delivery apps Yami, Linshi, Home-Cook and Mishi are potentially unsafe because the home kitchens providing their food are not licensed, said the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.
The four apps are the most popular of their kind in Shanghai. Shanghai FDA officials said they have received a large number of complaints about the kitchens.
Some residents complained that they felt sick after eating food from the websites, according to the bureau.
“Most of the home kitchens are not capable of temperature-controlled supply chain food delivery, and that could be dangerous under high-temperature conditions in summer,” said Zhang Lei, deputy director of the bureau’s food supervision and management department.
The apps each use between 1,000 and 6,000 home kitchens, and the information provided about how and where they operate is often vague.
A home kitchen called Rongrong sold more than 300 meals a month, making it Home-Cook’s top provider.
Registration is very easy, and anybody can apply for permission to open a home kitchen by completing a simple form.
The China Food and Drug Administration earlier said that the home-made food delivery websites should be closed due to food safety violations.
Home-Cook and Mishi are registered in Beijing and Hangzhou, while the other two are registered in Shanghai.
Linshi and Yami have stopped operating, and the latter is also being investigated by the Hongkou District Market Supervision and Management Bureau.
Home-Cook and Mishi have not yet stopped service, which is a matter for the food authorities in Beijing and Hangzhou to handle, said Shanghai FDA officials.
