Old scampi sellers get porridge

THREE people have been sentenced to prison terms for selling out-of-date scampi they had been paid to destroy, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
In June last year, the trio — two of whom were surnamed Shen and the other Tang — won a contract with a frozen seafood wholesaler to dispose of 70 tons of scampi that was no longer fit for human consumption. For the service they charged 1,000 yuan (US$154) per ton, the court heard.
However, after disposing of only a small amount of the catch, the trio decided instead to sell it to seafood retailers in Shanghai and Jiangsu Province for 2 yuan per kilogram, or the equivalent of 2,000 yuan per ton.
In court, Shen and his associates, said they sold the shrimp on the understanding it was to be used as fish food, but their pleas were rejected.
The case came to light when the original wholesaler spotted some of the expired scampi for sale at a market and alerted the authorities.
Four retailers were also punished with suspended prison sentences and fines for their roles in the deceit.
All of the unsold scampi has since been retrieved, the court said.
