Official tried for US$1.5m graft

THE former president of the Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences yesterday pleaded guilty at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court to charges of embezzlement and bribery involving more than 9 million yuan (US$1.45 million).

“I took money I should not have taken,” said Wu Xiangqian, who was also once a senior official at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Medicine.

“I am ashamed and I feel sorry for my family,” he said in court.

Wu is charged with embezzling 8.1 million yuan between 2006 and 2013 by falsifying the salaries of foreign teachers at the medical school and the costs of various projects.

He is also charged with taking 895,000 yuan in bribes between 2007 and 2013 from people whose careers and ambitions he helped to further.

Wu is being tried alongside Wang Xin, the former head of international exchange at the Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences, who is charged with embezzling more than 7.2 million yuan in cases related to those involving Wu.

The two were detained last September and neither has contested the charges. A verdict has yet to be reached.
