No beef with steak supplier

THERE is nothing but beef in the steaks of a Shanghai company that supplies a chain restaurant in central China’s Hunan Province.

The local company was given the all-clear after it was found its steaks contained no duck or other meat aside from beef, Shanghai’s food watchdog said yesterday following an earlier discovery that at least one of the Hunan restaurant’s beef steaks were found to contain duck meat.

Shanghai Pinshang Food Co, based in Songjiang District, supplies about 200,000 steaks a year to Jono, a popular restaurant chain in Hunan Province.

The order to close Pinshang’s factory has been rescinded, said Songjiang District Market Supervision and Management Bureau.

Changsha Food and Drug Administration has since ordered Jono to recall all steaks from its outlets. These steaks, weighing 1,970 kilograms, have been sealed for samples to be tested by a third-party testing agency. The results have not yet been announced.

According to an earlier report, Jono blamed its Shanghai supplier for the substandard products.

Pinshang is one of two steak suppliers to Jono; the other is based in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, according to Changsha Food and Drug Administration.

The supplying prices of Pinshang’s steaks range from 90 yuan (US$13) to 95 yuan per kilogram.
