Museum to honor the docks

CONSTRUCTION began yesterday on an outdoor museum that will tell the story of Shanghai’s earliest cargo docks.
Shanghai Docks Heritage Museum in the North Bund area is scheduled to be opened by the end of the year. The museum within a riverside park will include industrial relics, sculptures, videos and other exhibitions about the historic docks along the Huangpu River in Hongkou District.
The museum will highlight the history of renowned celebrities and scientists who entered Shanghai from the docks, an official with the district government said. They include Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin.
The riverside area in Hongkou was once the city’s earliest harbor for both cargo and passenger transportation. The British East India Company built the first cargo dock in Xujiatan near the current Daming Road E. in 1845.
There were once eight major docks, including the famous Huangpu, Yangshupu and Gongping Road docks, along the river.
When workers loaded cargo in the 1950s, the sirens of the ships could be heard from far away, said Ni Li, a senior resident who once lived on Daming Road E.
After the 1990s other major ports were developed in the city’s Pudong New Area and north Baoshan District.
The city and district governments have planned the North Bund area into becoming an upmarket business district with office buildings and commercial facilities. The once glorious docks have been replaced by riverside parks, luxury hotels and the tallest building in Puxi, the 320-meter-high Magnolia Square on Changzhi Road E.
