More spots open for marathon

ORGANIZER of the 2016 Shanghai International Marathon said yesterday that registration to compete for this year’s event will open at 10am on Monday.

The marathon will be held on October 30 this year and has spots for 38,000 runners — 3,000 more than last year — in four categories. Quotas will be allocated by a lucky draw after registration closes at 5pm on September 2.

There are 20,000 spots for the 42.2-kilometer full marathon — 5,000 more than last year, with 8,000 places set aside for the 21km half marathon. The 10k and 5k races each feature 5,000 runners.

The event organizer, Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Company, said the quota for full marathon had been raised because of increased demand that showed that the annual running event was attracting more “professionals.”

The races will be flagged off at 7am at Financial Square on the Bund. Both full and half marathons — taking different routes — will finish at Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District.

This year’s finish line will be inside the stadium.

Runners can register at the official website www.shang-ma.com or through Apple and Android race apps. Draw results will be announced on September 9.

The entry fee for the marathon and half marathon is 100 yuan (US$15) for Chinese competitors and 300 yuan for foreign runners.

For shorter races, it is 60 yuan for Chinese and 200 yuan for foreign runners. Last year’s event attracted 6,276 foreign participants.
