More ice please….
ANIMAL keepers in the Shanghai Zoo are giving a cool relief to animals there after the city's temperature soared above 39 degrees Celsius today.
Five alpacas have their hair cut, and ice cubes are placed beside tigers, sun bears and leopards. They lick the ice cubes or even lie on ice to have a comfortable cool rest.
Spray systems have been installed at primates' residences. The installations are opened at 10am every day and can cool down temperature by 2 degrees.
Ring-tailed lemurs, parrots and ostriches are also enjoying the spray in summer, while elephants are giving showers by zoo keepers.
In addition, seasonal fruits such as watermelons, grapes and dragon fruits have been added into the feed of gorillas, golden monkeys, and parrots. Apple ice is giant pandas' favorite, while gorillas are fed with ice jelly made of apples, carrots and cucumbers.
Air conditioners and fans have been in place in the giant pandas' pavilion, and the temperature is kept at 23 degrees.
Penguins and gorillas have the same cool treatment, while there are shelters for herbivorous animals.
