‘Monk’ accused of theft at city temple
A MAN has been detained on suspicion of stealing a smartphone and cash from a Buddhist temple in Jinshan District, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The 33-year-old, surnamed Zhu, was apprehended on February 18, Chinese New Year’s Eve, inside Donglin Temple by police officers patrolling the grounds.
The suspect was dressed in Buddhist robe at the time and told police he had once served as a monk at the temple.
He is accused of sneaking into the temple while its monks were busy and stealing an iPhone and 1,000 yuan (US$160) in cash from a dormitory.
Police said Zhu had a criminal record for theft from temples and had twice served prison time, most recently at the end of last year. The case is under investigation.
