Mobike thrown into Huangpu recovered by maritime authority

THE maritime authority recovered one of the rental bikes that were chucked into the Huangpu River.

On Monday, a man smashed six rental bikes and threw three bikes into the river from the Bund. Mobike staff rushed to the spot on Zhongshan Road E1, but the man managed to escape. He was later arrested by police.

The man surnamed Su is alleged to have confessed to police later that he had smashed up 20 Mobikes around the Bund area in total after ripping off their locks and throwing at least three of them into the river.

Police said the suspect had vandalized the bikes because he considered the bike rental scheme to be dangerous.

Huangpu District Maritime Bureau sent patrol boats to the area to recover the bikes over safety fears. A salvage boat managed to pull one bike out of the river.

According to Mobike staff, the bike, including its identity recognition chips, was not damaged and could still be put into use.

The bureau said the other bikes could not be found.

Shanghai-based Mobike has been nicknamed “Uber for bikes,” providing bike rental services through smartphone application. It has become popular among users.
