Mixed reaction to ‘serpent’ slide
A FIVE-STORY-high slide erected recently inside a department store in Pudong New area has generated excitement among shoppers, but some are worried about safety.
The serpent-shaped stainless steel slide, which is expected to open later this month after the Lantern Festival, attracted big crowds of people taking photos yesterday at the Pujian outlet of Printemps Department Store, Shanghai Daily found.
“It looks fun and my son was curious about it,” said yao Jin, who lives near the store.
“My son was very excited and very interested to have a try, but i still have some concerns about its safety.”
Another visitor, Jack Shen, said he will not be giving the slide a try.
“It is a stunt of the department store, and the slide seems to be very dangerous,” he said.
“Some people will probably get stuck inside it because it looks long and narrow.”
Iris hu, another shopper, said she will bring her son to play on it.
“There are similar slides at department stores overseas, and my son likes them,” she said, adding that extra safety measures should be considered.
The Pudong New area Market Supervision and Management Bureau said the slide does not fall into the special equipment category, which means that official inspection and approval is not required.
However, the bureau said the store has agreed to have the slide tested to ensure it is completely safe before it opens to the public.
