‘Missing’ bridge found outside developer’s office

PARTS of a 440-year-old bridge that mysteriously went missing in Pudong New Area have been found outside the office of a real-estate developer.
About eight pieces of the Yujie Bridge, which dates back to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), were found yesterday in a lawn in front of the developer’s office, which used it as an exhibit to promote sales.
The district’s cultural relics protection authority said Shanghai Vanke owned the land and it was within its rights to move the bridge but it still needed to inform the relics authority.
In a statement, Vanke said it had removed the centuries-old bridge for “better protection” as it was carrying out reconstruction work near the bridge.
Vanke said it had taken good care of the bridge during its removal and did not cause any damage to it. But it admitted that it had not notified the relevant departments before moving it.
“We are now reflecting on this issue. If we can communicate with the government more actively, we will be able to give better protection to the bridge,” said Xu Qingchuan, the vice general manager of Shanghai Vanke.
Song Feibo, an officer with the Pudong cultural relics protection authority, said they had checked portions of the bridge and found no damage on it.
