McDonald’s stops sourcing meat from Husi Food Co

MCDONALD’S today said it had stopped sourcing food from Husi Food Co’s mainland plants amid public anger after the company was found using expired meat.

The fast-food giant last week announced it would source chicken from Husi’s Henan plant after its Shanghai factory was found using out-of-date and substandard meat.

“We noticed that the public is worried about us using Husi products,” McDonald’s said in a statement on its website. “After listening to our customers, we suspended sourcing from Husi China (and all its joint ventures) starting last Friday for all our mainland restaurants.”

Senior executives from Husi’s parent, US-based OSI Group, including its chairman and CEO Sheldon Lavin, have arrived in Shanghai. They are due to hold a press conference this afternoon after a meeting with Shanghai Food and Drug Administration officials.

The FDA and police announced over the weekend that Shanghai Husi employees had been falsifying production dates on processed meat in order to extend its shelf life.
