McDonald’s says Big Macs back on menu after scandal

MCDONALD’S claims that Shanghai customers can once again buy products such as chicken burgers, fish burgers and Big Macs at some Shanghai outlets, after they were taken off the menu late last month.

The United States fast food giant said yesterday that it is gradually resuming supply in some Chinese cities, and for the time being menu choices will differ from each region.

McDonald’s Corp didn’t say how long it would take to offer all its products again.

This comes after its Shanghai-based long-term supplier was ordered to stop manufacturing and now faces stringent checks from the city food safety watchdog.

A local TV station showed that supplier Shanghai Husi Food Co, a unit of US-based OSI Group LLC, used long-expired meat and falsified production dates.

McDonald’s said it is increasing orders from other existing suppliers, such as McKey Food Services Ltd, in south China’s Guangdong Province.

McDonald’s and Yum Brands Inc, which owns KFC and Pizza Hut, both terminated sourcing deals with OSI Group’s China facilities after the outbreak of the Shanghai Husi scandal.

Six Shanghai Husi executives have been detained by police in the city.
