McDonald’s cleared after viral video
FOUR McDonald’s outlets were inspected yesterday by the city’s food watchdog but no irregularities were found, after photos apparently showing mold in an ice cream machine in one of the chain’s US branches went viral.
The photos of the US outlet tweeted by a former employee called “Nick” claimed to show mold covering a tray.
At a McDonald’s outlet on Hechuan Road in Minhang District yesterday, officials with the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration checked the license, food materials, operation procedures and hygiene.
No problems were found after quick tests were conducted and the disinfection records of the ice cream machine were checked.
But workers refused to open the machine, saying it is automatically heated and cleaned every day.
The administration said authorities have conducted 254 inspections of McDonald’s outlets in the city so far this year and 237 results were good, with the rest ordinary.
In a statement, McDonald’s China assured customers that its ice cream machines are clean and safe. It said all machines are automatically heated and disinfected every day and all parts are replaced regularly to ensure food safety.
