Master cartoonist He Youzhi dies in Shanghai at the age of 94

MASTER cartoonist He Youzhi died in Shanghai at the age of 94 yesterday. 

He was an illustrator of lianhuan hua, or palm-sized cartoon books. He died of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in Ruijin Hospital. 

Relatives, friends and colleagues reached his residence early today to pay their tributes to him.

Lianhuan hua originally targeted children and semi-literate readers. Some featured folk legends and operas and a number included images from noted illustrators.

Born in Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province in 1922, He began to draw cartoons in 1949. Over the years, he created numerous volumes, sets and series. He also drew illustrations for novels and created art works for children.He’s works “360 Trades in Old Shanghai” and “Old Shanghainese in Longtang” were exhibited at the World Expo Shanghai 2010. He has also held exhibitions in France, Singapore and elsewhere.
