Maritime court marks 30-year anniversary

TO mark its 30th anniversary, the Shanghai Maritime Court said it has handled more than 27,000 cases since its formation in 1984.

The cases involved more than 18 billion yuan (US$2.9 billion), and individuals and companies from more than 50 countries and regions, it said. Last year alone, the court handled 2,573 cases.

The nation’s first foreign ship seizure case and first foreign ship auction case were both handled by the court.

On April 19, it detained a Japanese ship owned by Mitsui OSK Lines and ordered its owner to pay delayed rent and losses to a Chinese firm. The vessel was released after its owner paid 2.9 billion Japanese yen (US$28.5 million) to the plaintiff.
