Man trafficked drugs to pay debt
AN unemployed man who agreed to carry drugs in order to pay off a debt was yesterday jailed for 12 years.
The Shanghai Railway Intermediate People’s Court heard that nearly 50 grams of methamphetamine was found when 32-year-old Zhang Li was questioned on a train to Jinan, in eastern China’s Shandong Province.
The court heard that Zhang told police that he had borrowed 4,000 yuan (US$652) from a man surnamed Wang, and when he couldn’t repay the debt he agreed to transport drugs for him.
Officers found drugs on Zhang as he traveled from Kunshan City in neighboring Jiangsu Province on April 5.
In court, Zhang claimed that the drugs were for personal use.
But the court ruled that his confession to police proved he was trafficking.
