Man held over death of girl, 6
A man has been detained in connection with the murder of a 6-year-old girl whose body was found on Thursday near a highway in Qingpu District, police said yesterday.
The child disappeared on Monday after playing near her grandmother’s home in the village of Xunan in suburban Qingpu, police said.
She had been staying with her grandmother for two days, they said.
Police said the suspect is a resident of Xunan who disappeared at the same time as the child. They did not say where they located him.
A search for the girl was launched after her family reported her missing on Monday. Her body was found on Thursday afternoon near a toll booth on the Huaxu Road exit to the Shanghai-Changzhou Highway.
The location is about a 15-minute drive from Xunan, police said.
Though the suspect has not been named, villagers said he is about 20 and grows grapes for a living.
They said he has lived in Xunan for two years, but seldom speaks to anyone.
Police said their investigation is ongoing.
