Man held after cyclist killed in hit-and-run

A hit-and-run driver was detained after he ran over and killed a cyclist in Shanghai's Qinqpu District on April 12, police said today.

The man, surnamed Wen, was previously jailed for three-and-a-half years for a traffic accident, also in Qingpu, that led to a motorcyclist's death in 2006

Wen, 25, was approaching the intersection of Xinsheng Road and You'ai Road in Qingpu around 7pm on April 12 when he hit a cyclist, who died at the scene, according to police.

Officers said he fled the scene. They used surveillance camera footage to track down the vehicle owner, surnamed Chen, who admitted lending the car to Wen, officers said. Police found the car in Qingpu's Baihe Town the following morning.

Wen turned himself in at Qingpu police station at 10am on April 13, police said.

In the 2006 accident, Wen was found guilty of driving without a license after he had hit and killed a motorcyclist.
