Man gets death for killing his wife’s dad

A MAN who stabbed to death his father-in-law and seriously wounded his estranged wife after she filed for divorce has been sentenced to death, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday.

Prosecutors said the man, surnamed Shen, had been married to Xue for 12 years and frequently beat her after drinking. Last July, Xue felt she had suffered enough and filed for divorce. She also left the family home and moved with her daughter into her parents’ house.

Furious at being abandoned, Shen, who is in his 50s, sent several menacing text messages to Xue. One of them read: “I promise I will kill you. Believe it or not.”

Later that month at a divorce hearing Shen admitted to beating his wife but said he didn’t want a divorce. To his annoyance, Xue remained adamant on the issue.

On July 30, Shen, armed with a knife, followed Xue from work to her home where they began arguing. Seeing the dispute, Xue’s father, 69, who was not named, tried to intervene. But as he approached the couple, Shen stabbed him in the chest. The attack proved fatal.

Shen also slashed at Xue, causing serious wounds to her face and head.

He then fled the scene, but was caught and detained by police just two hours later.

Attacker jailed

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison for attacking his girlfriend with a knife, the Songjiang District prosecutors office said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Wang, attacked the woman, surnamed Fan, whose age was given only as “under 20,” after she broke up with him.

Wang and Fan came to Shanghai as migrant workers last year, but had known each other for several years before that. Fan’s parents disapproved of the relationship because of the age difference and the fact Wang had been married before.

Fan then moved to Shanghai but Wang followed. When he failed to convince her to go back to him, he attacked her with a knife.

Fan lost several fingers in the attack while trying to block the attacks to her head.

Wang tried to flee but was caught when police arrived.
