Man charged over death of love rival
A MAN has been charged with killing his ex-girlfriend’s new lover and dismembering the victim’s body, the Putuo District Procuratorate said yesterday.
The suspect, 40-year-old Zhu Maohua, is alleged to have fatally stabbed Yuan Yi on January 31 during a fight at the home of his former lover, Li Dan.
According to prosecutors, Zhu broke into Li’s apartment after she had left for work, knowing Yuan was inside.
During an altercation, Zhu stabbed Yuan several times in the stomach, they said.
After realizing Yuan was dead, Zhu wrapped his body in a sheet, loaded it into his car and drove it to a rented apartment in Changxing Island.
Once there, he dismembered the body with an electric saw and put the parts into plastic bin bags, they said.
Zhu is also alleged to have used the victim’s cellphone to send a text message to Li saying he (Yuan) would be unavailable for a few days.
Li became concerned and contacted Zhu, with whom she had remained friends after ending their relationship, and asked if he would help her to find Yuan.
The following day, Li received another text message from Yuan’s phone saying he was in serious trouble and had to leave Shanghai. The sender appealed to Li to visit Yuan’s parents and explain what had happened, prosecutors said.
The fatal incident on January 31 was not the first time the two men had clashed. Earlier the same month, Zhu became angry after seeing Yuan in Li’s apartment and told her he planned to kill him, prosecutors said.
The following day, police officers were called to break up a fight between the two men at Li’s workplace.
After Yuan disappeared, Li contacted the police. On February 4, they detained Zhu on suspicion of being involved in the case.
