Man allegedly cut off wife’s hand

A 39-year-old man has been charged with cutting off his wife’s hand after he suspected she was having an affair and wanted a divorce, the Pudong New Area People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

According to prosecutors, Chen’s 29-year-old wife, Qing, had left him earlier this year because of domestic violence. But he traced her to Suzhou and forced her to return to their home in Shanghai. He told prosecutors he found a lease in her handbag which led him to suspect she had a lover.

He thought that if she was disabled she wouldn’t try to leave him again, prosecutors said.

On August 30, it is alleged that Chen took a cleaver and cut off her left hand at the wrist. He also tried to make sure it couldn’t be reattached by trying to chop it into pieces, prosecutors said.

He then threw the hand into a rubbish bin and called an ambulance.

Surgeons at the No. 455 Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army found the hand to be too badly damaged to ensure a successful operation.

Qing has since been fitted with an artificial hand.

Prosecutors quoted Chen as telling them: “I really love her and never want to lose her. I know that I did wrong but still hope my wife can forgive me.”

Chen has been charged with intentional injury. According to the law, cases of intentional injury that leave the victim severely injured or permanently disabled can be punishable with the death sentence.
