Male sophomore dies sudden death at Tongji University

A male sophomore of the School of Economics and Management of Tongji University collapsed and died a sudden death yesterday morning, the university said in a statement today.

When the emergency took place around 6:40am, the students were all gathering up to have breakfast together at the school canteen, after which, they would start a campus military exercise, the school said.

The student suddenly collapsed and fell down. His breath and heartbeats began to recover after a school doctor gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation and artificial respiration, the statement said.

An ambulance arrived at 7:15am to rush him to the Xinhua Hospital.

His parents were informed and arrived at the hospital around 1:15pm and he was announced dead at 2:07pm, said the statement.

The university said the student was to attend the military exercise, which kicked off yesterday. Military exercise for college student is compulsory campus program in China and all college students must attend it unless they have justifiable reasons, such as health problems.

“The coaches from the army arrived in our school on Sunday and there was a pep rally on Sunday morning,” an official of the university told Shanghai Daily. “The exercise had not yet kicked off when the incident happened.”

The reason for his death is still under investigation.

News website xinmin.com said the student, surnamed Cao and hailing from Anhui Province, had stayed up late recently but he had shown no symptoms of health problem before the sudden death.

The university said in the statement that the deceased student was "studying hard and doing well in academic performances."

“He also attended social practices with a devoted attitude and was active in student organizations, such as the students’ union and the youth league,” said the statement. “During this year’s summer vacation, he had just attended a voluntary teaching program in Dingxi of Gansu Province.”

“We are sad and feel sorry to lose such an excellent student,” the university said in the statement. “And we will stay together with the family to deal with the aftermath with all possible efforts."
