Lucky escape for children

EIGHTEEN students suffered minor injuries after the bus they were traveling in was hit by an engineering truck around noon yesterday near Shanghai Wildlife Park in the Pudong New Area.

The bus which had 49 passengers — 44 of them school students — flipped on its side, police said in a statement without explaining how the accident happened.

But a CCTV camera footage broadcast on Shanghai TV showed that the truck rammed into the rear of the bus, which was taking a left turn at the crossing of Nanliu Highway and Xuanchun Road.

The bus was held back from hitting the ground as it fell on a Porsche SUV, which was passing by on its left side.

The Porsche driver was not injured in the incident but it did scare some students who started crying loudly. All the 44 students were helped out of the bus and rushed to the Shanghai Pudong Hospital.

Eighteen students were slightly injured but were discharged from the hospital later in the afternoon after receiving treatment, a hospital source told Shanghai Daily.

The hospital said that psychologists at the hospital had provided counseling to some of the shaken students.

A teacher at Yutong Primary School in Pudong told Oriental Morning Post that the students were from her school. Most of them were around 10 years old. She said they were on an autumn outing trip.

Police said it was still investigating the cause of the accident.
