Lovesick man jailed for arson

A MAN has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for setting fire to the home of a woman with whom he had become infatuated, Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.

Prosecutors said the defendant, identified only as Xie, committed the arson attack after the woman, surnamed Zhang, rebuffed his romantic advances.

Prior to carrying out the crime, Xie had spent two years trying without success to woo Zhang — including lavishing expensive gifts on her and paying the rent on her apartment — and even divorced his wife, the court heard.

He was found guilty of setting fire to the property in an act of vengeance in March of this year.

At his trial, Xie admitted to being in the apartment shortly before the blaze broke out, but denied any guilt.
