Lots more green areas to open this year
AUTHORITIES plan to complete the development of more than 1,000 hectares of green land and 40 hectares of vertical greenery by the end of the year.
The projects will extend the “green cover” in downtown areas to 38.5 percent from 38.36 percent at present, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said yesterday.
A further 70,000-plus mu of forest will be added to the city this year, while a “green walkway system” will be built to link parks and other areas, it said.
The construction of five suburban parks spanning a combined 10,500 hectares in Qingpu, Songjiang, Minhang and Jiading districts and Chongming County will be accelerated and they should open next year, the bureau said.
The bureau also said yesterday that by the end of this year, a further 1 million additional households will be covered by the city’s garbage sorting scheme, while a 24-hour hotline will open to handle the public’s environmental complaints and concerns.
