Look and learn show on mechanical toy workings

AN exhibition from Britain on mechanical moving toys, or automata, is being presented at Shanghai Science & Technology Museum for three months from today.
Visitors will be able to learn about the mechanics of moving toys that combine technology and entertainment, as well as having a hands-on opportunity to build automata.
Ten large performing machines from Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre in Glasgow are all made by Russian sculptor-mechanic Eduard Bersudsky.
Set to haunting music and beautiful lighting, the machines are made from parts first used during Britain’s industrial age. The machines tell a story that is both humorous and tragic during the 30-minute show.
A further 40 smaller automata from Cabaret Mechanical Theatre of London will provide a more interactive visiting experience. Children will be able to control the toys’ movements with buttons and have a closer look at how mechanic tools, such as levers, cams and gears, make the figures move.
Visitors can reserve a session with museum tickets and ID cards. Each session lasts about 90 minutes, with at most 80 visitors at one go.
The museum also provides workshops for visitors to build their own automata. Reservations can be made via the museum’s WeChat account service.
