Local dies in waterfall accident
A SHANGHAI resident fell to his death in a waterfall in Xianju County in Zhejiang Province on Sunday, local police said yesterday.
The 35-year-old was rappelling on the 80-meter-high waterfall with 15 other adventurers on the Zhukengli Waterfall in Danzhu Village when the incident happened, Xianju police said.
As the area did not have mobile phone signals, a villager trekked a kilometer to inform the police.
The others on the expedition are safe. Police are still investigating the accident.
Heavy rains are common in Zhejiang Province during the current rainy season.
Gao Bo, captain of the Shanghai Search and Rescue Team, a social welfare organization, said some adventurers lack the experience as they explore the outdoors.
The weather conditions in the mountainous areas can be tricky and treacherous, adding to the risk, he said.
Many travelers start their outdoor exploration without an emergency plan, suitable equipment and knowledge on their physical condition, Gao said.
“They are not exploring but risking their lives,” he said.
