Local college man accused of pouring acid onto ex, stabbing her to death in bloody breakup

A man on suspicion of pouring corrosive acid onto his ex-girlfriend's head plus stabbing her to death has been arrested for murder allegation, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area announced Monday.

Both the man and the victim are students at Shanghai Maritime University, prosecutors said. According to prosecutors, the man, surnamed Xu, a postgraduate, told them that his girlfriend Zhou wanted to break up with him because she fell in love with one of her classmates in January this year. Xu didn't agree and quarreled often with Zhou over that.

Once when he threatened to beat up the classmate, Zhou laughed at him and said he was not strong enough.

Then Xu was alleged to have bought a knife, a bottle of hydrofluoric acid and six bottles of alcohol online and brought them to a lab on the campus.

On April 29, Xu allegedly quarreled with Zhou again after he called her, asking to make up with her. The next day when he saw Zhou and her new boyfriend having breakfast in the canteen and went to the library together, he got very angry and asked for a "negotiation" with the two after fetching the knife and acid.

The two refused and attempted to call the police after Xu took out the acid, which irritated Xu. Xu then caught Zhou and poured the acids on her head. Xu was also said to use the knife to stab Zhou several times.

Zhou was sent to the hospital but later died of hemorrhagic shock. Xu had later tried to killed himself by jumping out of the building but was controlled by the security guards. He was later caught by police.
