Lanes rejigged for tunnel repairs

WITH a section of the Yan’an Road E. tunnel to shut for repairs next week, authorities have rearranged motor lanes in an effort to minimize the expected congestions.

The renovation work on the city’s busiest underwater tunnel will start from midnight next Friday and is expected to cause traffic snarl on major roads in Huangpu, Hongkou districts and Pudong that connect to the tunnel.

Traffic moving south to north on the busy Xizang Road in Huangpu District will have an extra lane to make left turns and a straight on the intersection of Yan’an Road E.

The north-south lane along Henan Road (the section from Yan’an Road E. to Jinling Road E.) will reverse directions depending on the traffic. A green area at the intersection of Zhonghua Road and Wengjiazhinong Road will also be removed to increase road capacity.

Turning lanes will also be adjusted at the intersections of Renmin and Henan roads, and Fuxing and Henan roads.

Jiangxi Road (section from Renmin Road to Yan’an Road E.) will be a south-north one-way road. In Pudong, lanes along Pucheng Road’s section close to Dongchang Road will also be adjusted. The Pudong-to-Puxi side of the tunnel will be closed until next January.
