Knife-wielding man in ledge standoff

A MAN said to be a drug addict was held by SWAT police yesterday following a two-hour standoff during which he stood on a narrow ledge brandishing a knife.

Witnesses said the man climbed out of the window of a room on the second floor when police tried to hold him. Stripped to the waist and holding a knife, he walked back and forth on the ledge on Guangxi Road S., near People’s Square.

Despite efforts to persuade him to go back to the room, the man refused.

When he tried to escape to another window he was caught by officers, said police.
