Japanese passenger smoking inside plane toilet delays flight by 6 hours

A Japanese passenger smoking inside a plane toilet had caused a China Southern Airlines flight heading for Shanghai to be delayed for six hours on Saturday, Shanghai Television reported today.

The man was taken away by local police after the plane landed at Pudong International Airport and he was let go after he reportedly wrote a note of apology at the police station.

A passenger, surnamed Han, discovered the man was smoking inside the toilet about 30 minutes ahead of the flight CZ3557's scheduled take-off from the Shenzhen Airport early Saturday afternoon, the report said. Han reported the situation to the cabin crew immediately.

The flight security workers later confiscated the Japanese passenger's matches, which he managed to bring through security check.

Han said he urged the crew to make the Japanese apologize to other passengers but the chief attendant said they were not authorized to delivery that order. The captain then decided to hand over the man to police after landing at the Pudong airport.

The plane finally took off at 8pm.

The case also caused some passengers on the flight to question the security check practice at the Shenzhen airport, which failed to discover the matches. They also questioned why the smoke detector in the plane toilet did not alarm after the man smoked.
