Japanese passenger delays flight 6 hours by smoking in toilet

A Japanese passenger smoking inside a toilet caused a China Southern Airlines flight heading for Shanghai to be delayed about six hours on Saturday, Shanghai Television reported today.

Police took the man into custody after the plane landed at Pudong International Airport. He was released after he reportedly wrote an apology at the police station.

A passenger, surnamed Han, discovered the man smoking inside the toilet about 30 minutes ahead of flight CZ3557's scheduled departure from Shenzhen airport early on Saturday afternoon, the report said. Han reported the situation to the cabin crew immediately.

Flight attendants later confiscated the man's matches, which he managed to sneak through airport security checks.

Han said he urged the crew to make the passenger apologize to everyone onboard, but the chief attendant said they were not authorized to deliver such an order. The captain then decided to hand over the man to police after landing in Shanghai.

The plane finally took off at 8pm.

The case also caused some passengers to question security check procedures at the Shenzhen airport, which failed to discover the matches. They also questioned why the toilet’s smoke detector did not sound after the man started smoking.
