Incorrect English signs removed at downtown Zhongshan Park

English signs with serious grammatical mistakes at Zhongshan Park in Changning District have been removed and will be replaced with proper translations, the district government said today.
The signs came under the spotlight after someone used their Weibo microblog on Sunday to display the incorrect English translation over the introduction of a bronze bell.
The bell is a replica of one made in New York in 1865. The replica was shipped to Shanghai in 1881, according to its Chinese description.
It was first placed in the watchtower of a fire station in 1922. It was Shanghai's first fire bell.
The sign in the park read: "Original big bronze according to historical records: in 1865, American manufacturing, New York, originally shipped in 1881, Originally in the public concession will fire lookout, as Shanghai's first fire bell, displace to park in 1922..."
The Weibo poster identified as wakinlzy said, “It looked like the work of a junior middle school student, which is pure nonsense, and it is so shameful.”
Others said the translation was similar to those produced by online translation tools.
Shanghai Daily found most of the park’s English signs had been removed by this morning.
The district government said it had asked Shanghai International Studies University to retranslate the signs.
