Hundreds ordered to leave unsafe dorms
ABOUT 500 residents of four dormitory buildings in Putuo District have been ordered to leave because the buildings violate fire safety regulations, the district fire department said yesterday.
The move is part of the district’s campaign to crack down on fire hazards in district residences.
The Jialianjia White-collar Apartment complex on Chaozhou Road was leased mainly to local hospitals and restaurants for staff accommodation.
The complex has 500 people living in 208 rooms.
During their safety campaign, the fire authority found the buildings were originally used as a factory and were not licensed as residences. Two hundred residents were ordered out immediately and the rest must leave by the end of the month.
“For example, these buildings have open staircases, which is dangerous as smoke would spread quickly during an evacuation,” Xu Bing, assistant engineer with the district’s fire department said. “During the last inspection we also found many residents illegally stretching electric wires.”
The residents are being helped to move in time and renovations will be done.
