Hotel suicide victim suspected of causing Pudong vehicle crash
A man who drove his car into three other vehicles in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning, seriously injuring another driver, is thought to have later committed suicide, police said.
Witnesses said the man crashed his Audi into a line of vehicles waiting at a traffic light about 6:45am.
The car first hit a van carrying watermelons. Its driver was knocked unconscious and was later taken to hospital with multiple fractures to his shoulders and chest.
The Audi then struck another car and a bus before ploughing into the traffic signal and coming to a halt.
The driver, who is thought to be in his 30s, got out of the vehicle and began shouting and acting strangely before fleeing the scene, a witness was quoted as saying. Police arrived to find the road strewn with broken glass and burst watermelons.
About 30 minutes later, a man matching the driver’s description was seen entering a Holiday Inn Express hotel close to the scene of the traffic incident.
The man entered the building, rose to the ninth floor, then jumped to his death, police said.
A woman who witnessed the suicide said: “We were doing tai chi near the hotel when I saw a man in his bare feet enter the building and go upstairs. Soon after, he came flying back down.”
Police said they are investigating, but have yet to confirm if the driver and the suicide victim are the same person.
