High-flying criminal gang goes on trial

A GANG of two men and two women suspected of traveling from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to Shanghai to burgle the homes of wealthy people has been arrested, prosecutors in Baoshan District said yesterday.

The four are accused of flying to Shanghai at least three times in July, where they stole cash, watches and jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of yuan, prosecutors said.

Shanghai police were alerted to the group after spotting similarities in a number of burglaries reported by the public.

Officers became convinced the thefts were the work of the same person or gang, and after studying footage from surveillance cameras identified four suspects.

Police apprehended the quartet on July 31, as they were about to board a plane to Guangxi from the Hongqiao airport. They were found in possession of a cache of watches and jewelry.

The four people in custody are said to be unemployed and all natives of Guangxi. They all have criminal records in their home region, prosecutors said.

According to Baoshan police, the idea of the gang traveling to Shanghai to commit their crimes came from a suspect surnamed Chen.

“Shanghai has more rich people and there are lots of people from different places, so we thought it’d be easy to blend in,” police quoted him as saying.

The group targeted specific individuals whom they researched prior to flying to Shanghai, Chen said.

Once inside the properties, the four searched for jewelry, cash and other items they thought would not be immediately missed, he said.

They also went to great lengths to ensure everything else in the homes was left undisturbed, so as not to arouse too much suspicion, he said.

Immediately after the thefts, the group headed back to the airport and flew home to Guangxi, Chen said.

The arrest of the four was approved recently by prosecutors in Baoshan District.
