Heavy traffic jams expected for dongzhi

HEAVY traffic congestion is expected in some parts of the city between next Saturday and December 21, with more than 2.4 million people visiting cemeteries for the upcoming dongzhi on December 21, civil affairs authorities said on Friday.

Some expressways leading to big cemeteries should be the worst hit.

Dongzhi, or the winter solstice and literally meaning “extreme winter,” is a time when people pay their respects to the departed by visiting cemeteries and sweeping tombs.

In total, 2.48 million tomb sweepers are expected during this year’s dongzhi period bringing an extra 280,000 vehicles onto the roads, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

The most affected areas should be on Yueluo Road in Baoshan District, Tanglu Road in the Pudong New Area, Zhufeng Road in Qingpu District, Hunan Road in Pudong, Jiasong Road N. in Jiading, as well as some sections and intersections of the S2, S4, G50 and S5 highways.
