HK anniversary celebrations

A series of activities were held in downtown’s Xintiandi area over the weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the establishment of the special administrative region.

Themed “All in One Heart,” the event was backed by about 20 Hong Kong organizations in Shanghai, including the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.About 60 Hong Kong restaurants took part and announced that their 300 outlets in Shanghai will provide discounts or other offers throughout July to mark the anniversary.

One of the activities was creating the largest pin badge mosaic, for entry in the Guinness World Records.

From noon to 6pm on Saturday, people pieced more than 15,000 badges with heart signs together to form a 27.24-square-meter photo of landmark buildings in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

“I wish Hong Kong will always prosper and its cooperation between Shanghai will get closer and closer,” said Xu Yibo, vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee.

A short film directed by Hong Kong director Stanley Tong was shown, showing people from all over the world expressing their understanding of the spirit of the city.
