Green solution to Hongkou’s smelly creeks
TWO odorous creeks in Hongkou District will smell much sweeter come the end of this month.
The government, making the announcement yesterday, said floating green plants to detoxify the water had been placed on Jiangwanshihe, a creek along Wan’an Road in Jiangwan Town, and Nansitang, a creek in the northern part of the district.
Such plants absorb nitrogen and phosphorus in the water as they grow.
Combined with a technology known as aeration, which increases oxygen in the water, the treatment will clean up the creeks, according to the government.
All 176 sets of floating beds with green plants are in place on Nansitang, while 256 of 416 planned sets are on Jiangwanshihe.
All 14 aeration installations for the two creeks will start working by the end of this month.
The two creeks, together totaling 1.3 kilometers in length, were once considered to be ecological lost causes, but now residents are seeing improvements.
