Gold thief gives himself up
A knife-wielding thief stole two gold necklaces from a shop in Changning District yesterday, only to give himself up later in the day, Shanghai police said.
The 25-year-old, surnamed Zhu, asked to look at the chains at the store on Tianshan Road W. But when the sales assistant put them on the counter, Zhu threatened her with a knife, snatched the necklaces and made his escape, police said.
He told police he stole the necklaces, the value of which was not stated, to sell as he was in debt.
The robbery was the third at a gold store in recent months.
Earlier this month, a man in his 20s stole a gold necklace worth several thousand yuan from a shop on Sichuan Road N. in Hongkou District, while in mid-November last year, an 18-year-old man stole two necklaces worth more than 40,000 yuan (US$6,400) from a shop on Fengzhuang Road in Jiading District.
