Girl's granduncle lets her vomit on his own coat on Line 8 train

AN elderly man who had been widely praised by netizens for taking off his own coat to hold a girl’s vomit Thursday on a Metro Line 8 train was found five hours after a search notice was released by local Metro operator.

The Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co posted on Weibo about 11pm yesterday, saying the man was Zhu Guoliang, 58, the granduncle of the girl.

Earlier Shentong released a notice on Weibo about 6pm yesterday, saying a netizen sent them a picture showing an elderly man wearing a black T-shirt and an elderly woman holding a coat at the mouth of the girl sitting between them.

The netizen said the girl was sick, with a cooling gel sheet on her forehead and when she wanted to throw up, the elderly man took off his coat to let her vomit on it.   The netizen said he was moved by the scene and praised the man as being well-mannered.

The Metro operator decided solicit clues from the public to look for the man and “reward” him for what he did, saying that he had set a good example for everybody and contributed to creating a better environment for local Metro.

“By rewarding the elderly man, we hope that could promote positive energy in Metro,” a Shentong official told local news website xinmin.cn, “The positive energy is priceless, while our reward express both our encouragement and gratitude.”

Many people gave thumbs up to the man. “Those who had fought for seats or quarreled in Metro should feel ashamed,” one Weibo user said in a comment under the picture.

About 7:30pm, a netizen claimed the girl was a student from the kindergarten where she worked, while another netizen said she recognized the old man was the uncle of an official who is working in Tibet under Shanghai’s Aiding-Tibet program.

With clues provided by the public, the girl’s father was found to be Lu Bin, who confirmed that the elderly man was his uncle Zhu Guoliang, while the woman was Lu’s mother.   Lu said his uncle was not aware of the fact that he had been a famous person until he saw the picture and notice online and called him.

Lu said Zhu was surprised and unwilling to be interviewed by media as he said he was only obeying rules at public places. He said they were afraid that the girl’s vomit would make other passengers uncomfortable and used his coat as they forgot to take bags with them.

Lu said he was ashamed as he had been away from home for almost three years and only got to know his daughter was sick from online information. But he said he will return Shanghai in July or August.

Shentong said it has launched a special program to encourage the public to find out more Metro passengers showing positive energy to reward them.
