Gas leak suspected in Yangpu apartment blast

LOCAL authorities are assessing the damage and arranging repairs at an apartment block in Yangpu District after an explosion on Wednesday night, blamed on a suspected gas leak, that injured four people.

The local neighborhood committee said yesterday it was studying the impact on the block and neighboring buildings, which includes broken windows and damaged electrical wires, to make speedy repairs.

The injured are in a stable condition in hospital. Twenty-eight residents from 16 households in the apartment block were evacuated to a local hotel immediately.

The explosion blew out external walls on the second and third floors of the four-story building on 398 Kongjiang Road near rooms 201 and 301, believed to have been close to the center of the blast.

Investigations are continuing, but officials said preliminary inquiries pointed to a gas leak.

A resident surnamed Zhang in room 201 was likely to have triggered the explosion when he lit incense with a lighter, xinmin.cn reported yesterday. He suffered facial injuries.

An elderly couple in the room above, 301, and their grandson were rescued by 61-year-old security guard Chen Jianhua of a neighboring community, Shanghai Radio Station said.
