Gang sentenced for extorting cash from intoxicated driver

FOUR men who extorted 10,000 yuan (US$1,504) from an intoxicated  driver were sentenced to six to seven months in jail with a one-year reprieve for extortion by the Fengxian District People’s Court, prosecutors said. They were also fined 3,000 yuan each.

According to prosecutors, the four men hatched a scheme to extort money from people driving out of a karaoke house’s parking lot on March 23. When a driver who looked like he had been drinking pulled out they followed him.

After forcing the man, surnamed Shou, to stop by rear-ending his car, the gang demanded “compensation,” threatening to report him to police if he did not comply.

Shou offered them 2,000 yuan but they demanded more and he reluctantly gave them 10,000 yuan.

Shou called the police and the next day the four were captured.
