Gang caught after dubious call

AN alleged thief, pretending to be a cop, called a victim to double check on how much she had lost, was promptly caught, Jiading District police said yesterday.

Four suspects, surnamed Luo, Deng, Zhou and Wu, have been arrested for stealing more than 80,000 yuan (US$12,800) from more than 10 people in Jiading.

Luo, pretending to be a police officer from Yangpu District, called a woman whose bag the gang had stolen from a restaurant as she did not trust Deng.

The woman told her she had lost 8,000 yuan in cash, car keys and her identity and social security cards.

The woman had already reported the robbery to the police when she received the dubious phone call. Police said the call gave them clue as they rounded up the suspects.

Luo told the police after she was caught that she found the woman’s phone number on her name card in her wallet. The four suspects were caught in Baoshan District on March 30.
